Preparing Key Stories for Interviews
To prepare for interviews, instead of trying to predict every possible question, it is more efficient to prepare 3 to 4 memorable and deep stories that demonstrate your engineering maturity.
Using the STAR Method, these core stories can be adapted to answer multiple different technical and behavioral questions.
Story Structure
The stories should focus on different core competencies required for a senior role:
Story 1: Architecture and Scalability
- Focus: High-level decisions, scalability, micro-architectures, and collaboration.
- Theme (Example): Building a micro-frontend platform.
- What it demonstrates: Architectural depth (e.g., Module Federation), cross-team collaboration, deployment independence, and technical leadership in tooling choices.
Story 2: Critical Problem Solving (Production)
- Focus: Production debugging, Root Cause Analysis, performance optimization.
- Theme (Example): Extreme slowness (8+ seconds) in a core business application.
- What it demonstrates: Maturity to handle real-world issues (New Relic, DevTools), backend collaboration (solving N+1 query problems), and deep framework knowledge (e.g., unnecessary re-renders, virtualization, Data Loader).
Story 3: Leadership, Security, and Standards
- Focus: Leadership, best practices, code quality, security.
- Theme (Example): Implementation of JWT Authentication or Google Analytics and SEO.
- What it demonstrates: Technical leadership and concern with cross-cutting aspects: security (XSS/CSRF, HTTPOnly), continuous quality, and understanding of business impact (conversion, access, SEO).
By mastering these 3 stories in low-level details, you will have flexible material to cover almost any question, ensuring focused, relevant, and consistent answers.
